Online poker is as safe as brick and mortar poker. In fact, several arguments can be made that online poker is safer than brick and mortar poker. Before you call me crazy, give me a chance to make my arguments. I like to think of myself as a fairly logical person (don’t we all) and I think you just might agree with me by the end of this article.

How Safe is Online Poker?

Online poker is completely safe if you follow a few basic precautions. As long as you stick with well known and reputable poker sites, you can rest assured that your bankroll is just as safe as it would be at any live poker table. I have held upwards of $80,000 online at a time and never felt a twinge of worry at the thought.

Much of people’s concern with the safety of online poker has to do with the integrity of the games. Many newer poker players feel that because they cannot inspect the poker facility in person, they are being asked to put too much trust into something they cannot see. But if you think about it, that’s how it is no matter where you play poker. You have to trust that the place you’re playing at is offering a fair game whether it be live or on the internet.

So how do you ensure a safe and fair poker experience? Well, you start by only playing at reputable poker rooms. Live poker players tend to stick with the big name poker rooms in Las Vegas or at home games of friends they trust and online players tend to stick with the most well known online poker rooms. When it comes to real money poker, reputation is everything.

Yup. There’s one thing I can tell you for sure: no one has ever died or been robbed at gunpoint due to online poker. Live poker games are robbed occasionally and people have been shot over poker games plenty of times in the past. This doesn’t happen all the time, of course, but it can definitely be argued that there’s a major difference in personal safety between online poker and live poker.

Bad things can even happen at major card rooms in Las Vegas. Former WSOP champion Greg Raymer was robbed at gunpoint on his way back to his hotel room at the Bellagio a few years back. More recently, poker pro Scott Montgomery was also robbed at the Bellagio – this time by a knife wielding thug in a bathroom.

But that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop playing live poker any time soon. I love both poker formats for their individual advantages. The odds of being robbed at gunpoint in a live poker game are extremely low if you practice a little common sense.

I’m not claiming that live poker is dangerous by any means, I’m simply using it to make the point that online poker is at least as safe as live poker.  The odds of anything bad happening are remote no matter where you play.

Poker Safety and Common Sense

A little common sense will take you a long ways in the poker world. If a poker bonus looks too good to be true or a poker site looks shady, it’s probably a good idea to investigate a little further before getting involved.
